Dave Turgeon
– swamp living, family man of
4 kids, front man from
O.L.D., former front man of the Sluts,
Mardi Gras loving, and general
wild man - has taken upon himself to
start a new tradition of the
carnival season.
The
2.2 Marching Club will take to the streets
of city on Monday,
January 28th to waggle their butts and
spread cheer on St. Charles
Avenue.
The plan is to meet
at Fat Harry’s Bar at 5pm, to
begin marching down
the neutral ground by 6:30pm, the 2.2
miles to the Circle Bar at Lee
Circle. A band will be leading us.
A permit is not needed
since there will be no obstruction of
traffic.
This will be the 3rd year of the march.
Womens should wear
a Tutu.
Mens should wear classic Satin MG costumes.
We are also trying to bring back the
tradition of painted, glittered
shoes. So wear them if you’ve
got them.
So far we’ve
got a group of about 30 people and hope
many of you who
read this will join us.
As many of you know,
it’s exhilarating to take to the
streets and call
the town our own. We own this town.
We will wag our butts.
Come and join in.
Please bring a tad of moola to help
pay a few bucks
to the musicians. Those hard working,
always available to make joyous sounds,
musicians.
Dave will also have
poles of flowers (similar to St. Patrick
Day
flowers) for sale if you want to have
some throws.
You may receive this
after the fact, but there will be a
meeting
tonight, Monday 21st at 6pm at Will
Smith’s apartment on the downtown
corner of Calliope and Camp. 1st floor,
front door apt.

Shangri-La
Welcomes Angela Hill
as Grand Marshal for 2008
posted December 23,
2007
by: J.J. McKay
The
Krewe of Shangri-LA is celebrating their
35th Anniversary by welcoming Angela
Hill as their Grand Marshal. Angela
Hill has been an integral force at WWL-TV
in New Orleans for almost thirty years,
joining the station's "Eyewitness
News" staff back in 1975. And after
close to three decades of being invited
into thousands of local homes every
weeknight, she has become a broadcast
icon in the New Orleans market, where
viewers know her on a first-name basis.
During her extraordinary
career, Angela has garnered numerous
local and national industry awards.
She has already been inducted into the
New Orleans Broadcasting Hall of Fame,
while the New Orleans Press Club has
honored her with its coveted Lifetime
Achievement Award. A brass plate in
front of the Hilton Hotel lists Angela's
name, along with other prominent local
civic leaders, as a distinguished member
of the city's "Walk of Fame."
Her national honors include the prestigious
Gabriel Award, the Gracie Award, and
a Freedom Foundation Award.
Angela's contributions to her community
also extend way beyond the television
cameras. Her profound love of animals
and people alike has inspired her to
give countless hours to diverse organizations
ranging from the New Orleans SPCA to
the United Way. Angela was named the
first-ever "Animal Ambassador"
by the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine
for her tireless work promoting the
issues of animal welfare. For the last
eight years, she has led the Diabetes'
"Walk for the Cure," and has
also chaired dozens of fundraisers.
While year after year, she proudly wears
her "fashion bargains" on
the anchor desk as part of her beloved
"Goodwill Week" to support
Goodwill Industries.
Today, along with
co-anchoring both the "At Five"
and "At Six" editions of Eyewitness
News, Angela enjoys focusing her considerable
journalistic skills on both people-oriented
features like her "For the Record...with
Angela" series as well as her "Animal
Patrol" special reports.

The Krewe of Bacchus
continues it's tradition of having celebrity
royalty by selecting WWE Superstar as
Bacchus 2008. Hulk Hogan (real name
Terry Bolea) has been a professional
wrestler for over 30 years wrestling
his first professional match against
Brian Blair in Fort Meyers, Florida.
Winning his first Championship in June
of 1979, Hulk Hogan was introduced to
Vince McMahon Sr. of the World Wrestling
Federation (later WWE) by wrestling
legend Terry Funk. Hogan wrestled for
the WWF including matches against legends
Bob Backlund and Andre the Giant. Against
the wishes of Vince McMahon Sr., Hulk
Hogan filmed his scenes for the Rocky
III, as Thunderlips, in a exhibition
fight against Sylvester Stallone's.
Hogan soon wrestled
in the AWA (American Wrestling Association)
a wrestling territory owned by Verne
Gagne in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Starting
as a heel (bad guy) his popularity grew
so the organization made him a babyface
(good guy) using as his theme music
"Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor.
Rejoining the WWF
in 1983, Hulk Hogan won the WWF Championship
by pinning the Iron Sheik at Madison
Square Garden. After winning the title
commentator Gorilla Monsoon proclaimed
"Hulkamania is Here!" Hulkamania
was born with his supporters being called
Hulkamaniacs. Hulk Hogan teamed with
Rocky III co-star Mr. T. to take on
"Rowdy" Roddy Piper and "Mr.
Wonderful" Paul Orndorff, during
the Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection with
MTV in a feud that included Cyndi Lauper.
At Wrestlemania III, the superbowl of
wrestling, Hulk Hogan body slammed Andre
the Giant in front of over 93,000 fans,
the largest recorded attendance for
a live indoor sporting event in North
America and the largest paying crowd
in the history of professional wrestling.
He went on the hold the WWF Championship
several times including a four year
reign.
Hogan went on to
star in several movies and TV shows
including No Holds Barred, Suburban
Commando, Mr Nanny, and Thunder in Paradise.
While filming for Thunder in Paradise,
he signed with World Championship Wrestling
(WCW) which also was filmed at the Disney/MGM
Studios in Orlando, FL. Hogan won the
WCW Championship in his first match
with the promotion in a dream match
against The Legendary Ric Flair. He
would go on to hold the WCW Championship
several times.
In 2002 Hogan returned
to the WWF/WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment)
where he has appeared on and off since
then.
Hogan has most recently
appeared on his own VH-1 reality TV
show called Hoagan Knows Best and is
host for the comeback series of American
Gladiators on NBC. Ironically, NBC's
revival of American Gladiators is scheduled
to premiere on Sunday January 6, 2008
(night
of the Phunny Phorty Phellows),
the first day of Mardi Gras, before
moving to Mondays at 8:00 ET/PT.
So train hard, say
your prayers, and eat your vitamins
because Hulkamania gonna run all over
you on Super Sunday.

Phunny
Phorty Phellows To Ride Unique Streetcar
Route to Announce
Start of 2008 Carnival Season
On
the Eve of the NCAA National Championship
Football game in New Orleans, the
Phunny Phorty Phellows take to the
streets to Herald the arrival of the
2008 Mardi Gras season to all parts
of the Cresent City from Historic
Mid-City, The CBD, and Uptown by traversing
the Canal and St. Charles Streetcar
lines. The path taken by the group
this year is the longest route by
any Carnival Organization in New Orleans.
Because
the Phellows’ traditional St.
Charles streetcar path is still undergoing
repair, the group will break precedent
on Sunday January 6 and begin their
ride at Beauregard Circle on N. Carrollton
near City Park down Canals St. and
up the recently reopened section on
the St. Charles streetcar line in
what is now being called THE ROUTE
OF THE GENERALS.
The
costumed and masked krewe will assemble
on the neutral ground in front of
City Park (at North Carrollton next
to Beaureguard Circle) at 6:30pm and
will board the streetcar at 7pm sharp.
The
Phellows are an historic Mardi Gras
organization that first took to the
streets 1878 through 1898. They were
known for their satirical parades
and today¹s krewe members’
costumes often reflect topical themes.
The group was revived in 1981.
One
Carnival historian has referred to
the organization as the “Dessert
of Carnival.”
The Phunny Phorty Phellows first appeared
on Fat Tuesday, 1878, when they began
the tradition of following the Rex
parade. Since that time, the Phunny
Phorty Phellows have made distinguished
themselves as one of the liveliest
additions to Mardi Gras with their
hijinks and well-meaning mockery of
the day’s events (one 1881 float
depicted Rex’s traditional symbol,
the Boeuf Gras, as a heifer). The
original Phunny Phorty ceased parading
and ultimately disbanded in 1885.
Kevin
Costner announced
Grand Marshal of Endymion 2008

in Lynwood Californa. As a child Costner
enjoyed sports in spite of his small
statue, took piano lessons, sang in
the first Baptist Choir and wrote poetry.

Beach, USA which was filmed in 1974

made it to the final cut. His role was

him are his slashed wrists as the mortician
dresses his corpse in the movie's opening

his hand and foot prints were set in
concrete in front of Grauman's Chinese

and Modern West", a rock / country
band which he recently founded with
the encouragement of his wife (Christine).
He is currently on a worldwide tour
with the band.

her unending energy, vision and love
of Carnival. Mary Katherine has served
on many boards and committees in the

This special Anniversary
Poster marks a comeback to a one of
the Krewe's lost tradition from their
past. This night was a momentous one
for the Krewe. And 100 limited proofs
signed by the artist were offered on
sale to all attendance.
Ponce a Mardi Gras float
designer for Kern Studios, an Illustrator
and designer. The original vision of
his art was to show mystical land with
a touch of Mardi Gras. "Shangri-La"
is a fictional place described in the
1933 novel Lost Horizon by British author
James Hilton. In the book, "Shangri-La"
is a mystical, harmonious valley, gently
guided from a lamasery, enclosed in
the western end of the Kunlun Mountains.
Shangri-La has become synonymous with
any earthly paradise but particularly
a mythical Himalayan utopia—a
permanently happy land, isolated from
the outside world. The word also evokes
the imagery of exoticism of the Orient.
The story of Shangri-La is based on
the concept of Shambhala, a mystical
city in Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
Artist Manuel Ponce discusses his
vision of the poster
Ponce's vision of the
poster for Shangri-la comes from the
context to which this "Garden of
Eden" might be used, to represent
a perfect paradise that exists hidden
from modern man.
"This artwork can be used as an
analogy for a life-long quest for something
elusive that is much sought." Said
Ponce at the unveiling. "For a
man who spends his life obsessively
looking for a cure to the pains of the
world, or a great sadness such a cure
could be said to be that man's own vision
of "Shangri-La". And certainly
his art does put a smile on your face
as it transports you to a place that
is only New Orleans Mardi Gras Krewe
